Understanding Mental Health
This is a new blog for us to enjoy. I've been a psychiatric nurse for 40 years and still find mental illness misunderstood. There are myths about people with mental illness. There is a history of mental illness treatment that would shock you and that would make you glad you didn't have mental illness 50-100 years ago. There is a lack of knowledge about medications as well. So,in this new venue, I'll be sharing a Manual I wrote for homecare workers to understand mental illness. Each week (oh, let me remember to post each week)I will explore an area of mental illness and its treatment in an effort to dispel myths and understand the person with a mental disorder. By the way, there are only 3 types of mental illness; mood disorders, thought disorders and personality disorders. We will learn about each of these in the weeks and months to come. I hope you will become a follower AND contribute, especially if you are a caregiver or if you are a person with a mental/emotional disorder.
